Historic landmark: For the first time Chile grants an European Geographical Indication

6 November, 2012

For the first time in Chile, the National Institute of Industrial Property – INAPI-granted an European Geograhical Indication, which is considered a milestone. The corresponding application for the famous Turron of Jijona from Spain was filed and processed by attorney Felipe Schuster, from Alessandri & Compañía, on behalf of the Regulatory Council of Protected Geographical Indications Jijona and Turron of Alicante.

The exact coverage for which Chile has granted registration of the new Geographical Indication “JIJONA” is: “nougat made within Jijona Township, in the Province of Alicante, Spain, according to traditional methods and local ingredients, which is an agricultural product for human consumption, which is a mass composed of at least 12% of honey, sugar, egg, and toasted almonds, varieties valencia, mallorca, marcona mollar and planeta.”

The granting of this Spanish Geographical Indication is unprecedented, as Chile had never before recognized a product of Europe with that feature.
