Dispute Resolution and Arbitration
29 February, 2016

LP Building Products Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wood building materials including OSB, structural framing products, and exterior siding, won a landmark ruling at the Court of Appeals and the Environmental Court, both in Valdivia, Chile.

After the Commission for Environmental Assessment approved an expansion project at its plant, indigenous groups of Lanco and Panguipulli sought to reverse this approval through an injunction brought before the Court of Appeals of Valdivia and the Environmental Court of the same city, which were rejected for lack of jurisdiction and inadmissibility respectively, leaving the resolution of environmental qualification fully valid.

The aim of the approved project, which involves an investment of US $ 55 million, is the expansion of the existing OSB and siding plant, which will increase production from 130,000 to 290,000 m³ / finished product. The wood used corresponds to native species (renovales managed forest type (Roble-Rauli-Coigüe) and exotic (pine, eucalyptus, etc.), but this increase in wood consumption will be only of exotic species. The project is located in the region of Los Rios, province of Valdivia, Lanco and Panguipulli, Chile.
