NIC Chile Incorporates Internationalized Domain Names for .CL
We inform you that as of tomorrow, September 21, 2005, NIC Chile, the Chilean Domain Name Registrar will incorporate Internationalized Domain Names or IDN’s. These include special characters for different languages, and in the case of Chile, seven new characters will be added to the group of symbols already used by NIC Chile for the registration of domain names. These are the five vowels with accents, the “u” with a diæresis and the letter “ñ”.
With the aim of allowing users in different countries to register and use domain names containing the characters inherent to their respective languages, the IDN system has already been operating in the .com and .net gTLD’s, and also in ccTLD’s such as those of Germany, Austria, Poland and Brazil.
As IDN's are a recent innovation, navigators and other frequently used Internet programs have had to be updated in order to correctly reflect these new characters. Some, such as Firefox, have already incorporated these updates in their most recent versions, and others, such as Internet Explorer, require the installation of a plugin.

NIC Chile Incorpora Nombres de Dominio Internacionalizados para .CL
Les informamos que a partir de mañana, 21 de septiembre, NIC Chile incorporará nombres de dominio internacionalizados (IDN). Los Internationalized Domain Names o IDN, incluyen caracteres especiales para distintos idiomas, y en el caso de Chile, se agregarán siete caracteres al conjunto de símbolos que utiliza NIC Chile para la inscripción de nombres de dominio. Estos son las cinco vocales acentuadas, la “u” con diéresis y la eñe.
Con la finalidad de permitir a los usuarios de los distintos países el inscribir y utilizar nombres de dominios que contengan los caracteres propios de sus respectivos idiomas, el sistema IDN ya ha estado operativo para los gTLD .com y .net, así como también en países tales como Alemania, Austria, Polonia y Brasil.
Al ser IDN una innovación reciente, los navegadores y otros programas de uso frecuente en Internet han necesitado actualizarse para poder mostrar correctamente estos nuevos caracteres. Algunos, como Firefox, ya incorporan esto en sus últimas versiones, mientras que otros, como Internet Explorer, requieren de la instalación de una extensión o plugin.
