Veto eliminates indigenous consultation and regulation of protected wild areas in electric concessions passed

3 September, 2013

Santiago, August 28, 2013

In compliance with an agreement reached during the discussion of the project that establishes a procedure to award electric concessions, the matters related to the indigenous consultation as contemplated in International Labor Organization Convention 169 and to expressly sanction, in the law, compliance with regulations on protected wildlife areas, were eliminated from the project, in the absence of an agreement during the debate in Congress.

With 48 favorable votes, 14 against and 3 abstentions, The House of Representatives passed the objections to the project submitted by the President of the Republic (bulletin 8270) establishing a procedure to award electric concessions.

The message accompanying the veto – as sent to constitutional processing – sustains that senators and representatives failed to reach an agreement on the modifications made by the Senate on the indigenous consultation contemplated in International Labor Organization Convention 169 and on compliance with regulations related to protected wildlife areas.
