Rodrigo Velasco A. is the IP Managing Partner and leads Alessandri’s Technology, Media & Telecoms Department. He has specialized in the field of Industrial and Intellectual Property. He works on matters related to licenses, contracts, tax aspects and litigation in connection with trademarks, patents, unfair competition, software and internet and Data Privacy. He created Alessandri´s Copyright and Entertainment Law Department.

After graduating (Magna Cum Laude) from Universidad de Chile Law School in 2001, he was awarded a Distinction Diploma from the Chilean Ministry of Justice for his outstanding internship in the Public Legal Assistance Service. During 2002 and 2003, he studies at the Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts, where he was, on two occasions, granted the B.A.S. scholarship (Berklee Achievement-based Scholarship) and specialized in the legal aspects of the music industry.

He is the author of the thesis work “Intellectual Property Rights on the Internet” (2000). He has lectured in several conferences and seminars, written several articles on Intellectual Property matters, and is a regular contributor to trademark and copyright journals.

He headed the team that granted the first registration of a sound mark in Chile, and filed the first certification trademark application in our country. He appeared before the Chilean Senate’s Committee on Education and was a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Council for Culture and Arts in connection with the latest amendment to Intellectual Property Law 17.336 and its Regulations.

In 2001, he was included, by the Minister of Culture, in the appointment of the first three arbitrators and mediators to resolve conflicts on the collective enforcement of copyright, of the National Council for Culture and Arts.

Academic activity

Rodrigo Velasco Alessandri is currently a professor in the Industrial and Intellectual Property Diploma program of Universidad Finis Terrae, and in the Masters in New Technologies and Intellectual Property program of Universidad de Chile.

Beyond legal

Rodrigo Velasco is a musical producer, pop music and jazz performer and compositor. He studied piano with Jorge Campos Aravena, classical guitar with Mario Zamorano, and electric guitar with Ignacio Díaz, at Escuela Moderna de Música. He was a member of La Trapananda and La Bicicleta ensembles during the 90s’, and has been a jam guitarist in recordings and live performances by such musicians as Fa García, Jairo Triviano, La Rue Morgue, Yo Soy Pérez, Yael Meyer, as well as in soundtracks (Azul y Blanco), and several commercials.

During 2002 and 2003, he studied composition and arrangement at the Berklee College of Music, at Boston, being granted the B.A.S. (Berklee Achievement-based Scholarship) and participated in the Collaborations group and in the Berklee World Music Ensemble. He is an active member of the Sociedad Chilena del Derecho de Autor (Chilean Copyright Association) – SCD. He evaluated projects applying for funding from National Council for Culture and Arts (2005-2006) and is currently Director of Trapananda Publishing, a music publishing company and President of Fundación Beethoven.

Former member of Corporación Música para Todos, National Music Development Council of the National Council for Culture and Arts (CFMN/CNCA) representing foundations and private corporations.
