Summary

Rodrigo has worked in the academic and professional fields. After obtaining a degree in legal and social sciences with maximum distinction at the Universidad Austral de Chile, he obtained a Master’s degree in European Private Law and a PhD in Law from the University of Utrecht. His thesis entitled “The effect of a change of circumstances on the binding force of contracts” was published in Europe by the publisher Intersentia. In addition, a paper based on his thesis was awarded with the Clive M. Schmitthoff Essay Competition, granted by the Institute of International Commercial Law (Pace University, New York) in conjunction with the Center for Commercial Law Studies (Queen Mary-University of London ), being the only Latin American that has obtained it to date.

Between 2013 and 2016, Rodrigo was a Career Development Fellow at the Institute of European and Comparative Law of the University of Oxford, and Supernumerary Fellow in Law of Brasenose College, of the same University. Currently, he remains linked with the University of Oxford as Visiting Research Fellow of the Institute of European and Comparative Law. He currently serves as a professor of civil law and consumer law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. He has also taught postgraduate courses at Chilean and foreign universities.

Rodrigo has published numerous articles in legal journals in Latin America, Europe and the United States, in comparative law, contract law, consumer law and personal data protection. The year 2017 published in the prestigious editorial Hart, in conjunction with Professor Stefan Vogenuaer, the book entitled “The Future of Contract Law in Latin America”.

Regarding his professional experience, Rodrigo has been a consultant in commercial, contractual and consumer law matters. He has also served as General Secretary of the Universidad Austral de Chile and as a member of the Court of Appeals of Valdivia.

Publications

Academic activity

Professor of civil law and consumer law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. He has also taught postgraduate courses at Chilean universities, including the University of Chile, Adolfo Ibáñez and Concepción. He has also been a visiting professor at foreign universities such as the Universities of Utrecht, Sevilla and Ferrara. He is also Visiting Research Fellow of the Institute of European and Comparative Law of the University of Oxford.

Beyond legal

Rodrigo is passionate about music, being a founding member of the rock band Thementes, who have released two albums under the independent label Tue-Tue. He is also an amateur runner, having completed the marathons of Edinburgh and Rome.
